159.557 Muslim Prisoners Receive Special Remission on Eid al-Fitr

Jakarta – A total of 159,557 Muslim prisoners nationwide have been granted remissions and sentence reductions to commemorate the 2024 Eid al-Fitr, according to the Ministry of Law and Human Rights.
Minister Yasonna Laoly stated that remission and sentence reduction are granted to inmates and children in conflict with the law who have striven to improve themselves and do good while serving their time in prison.
"Remission and sentence cut is an indicator that inmates and children in conflict with the law have observed rules in prisons and have participated in prison programs properly," Minister Laoly said in a statement on Tuesday, as quoted from Antara site.
The minister expressed hope that the remission would motivate and embolden the prisoners' will to improve their lives and make themselves useful to others.
He also commended all prison officers who have performed their duty to supervise prisoners properly, as well as government officials, social institutions, and other agencies that have supported the ministry's works.
"I reminded you all to continue to improve yourselves, enhance your faith, and improve your personal quality. Be a person who obeys the law, has a noble personality, and is useful for the nation," Minister Laoly remarked.
According to the ministry, the 159,557 prisoners comprise 158,343 adult prisoners and 1,214 children in conflict with the law, who received varied sentence reductions from 15 days, one month, one month and 15 days to two months.
Of the 158,343 adult prisoners, 157,366 of them received sentence reduction, and 977 were declared free immediately. Meanwhile, 1,195 children in conflict with the law received sentence reduction and 19 of them were declared free immediately.
The three provinces with the most prisoners receiving remissions are East Java, with 16,608 inmates; West Java, with 16,336 prisoners, and North Sumatra, with 16,030 inmates.
Meanwhile, the three provinces with the most children in conflict with the law receiving remissions are North Sumatra, with 102; West Java, 98; and South Sumatra, 86.
