Jakarta – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) revealed the reason for the heatwave in Indonesia recently.

Dwikorita Karnawati as BMKG Head said that her company had conducted temperature observations. As a result, the hot weather phenomenon that hit Indonesia cannot be categorized as a heatwave.

“Especially in Indonesia, what happens isn’t a heatwave, but hot temperature as in general,” Karnawati said on Friday (May 10).

She further said the hot temperature could also be influenced by the condition of the waters around Indonesia. Then, Karnawati highlighted that Indonesia has a warm marine climate and mountainous topography which can result in increased air movement.

“Therefore, the extreme temperature rise can be held back by the presence of rain that cools the surface periodically. This is what causes the absence of heat waves in Indonesia,” she explained.

Karnawati added that the hot temperatures that happen in Indonesia could be due to surface heating due to reduced cloud formation and reduced rainfall.

According to her, this hot condition is also something that usually happens during the transition from the rainy season to the dry season.

“This transitional period is generally characterized by sunny mornings, hot afternoons with rapid cloud growth accompanied by an increase in air temperature, then rain in the afternoon or evening,”

Some people often complain about the high air temperature in Indonesia in recent times. Some even suspect that the current hot weather in Indonesia is a heat wave.

Not only in Indonesia, the hot temperature is also felt by several neighboring countries, such as Vietnam, Thailand, and Singapore. These countries have issued warnings about heat waves to close public facilities.
