Jakarta – TikTok plans to lay off a massive of its operational and marketing workforce worldwide. As many as 1,000 employees are expected to be affected by the layoffs.

This was conveyed by an employee, The news about the layoffs was first reported by The Information, and TikTok has not yet responded. 

The global layoffs are expected to hit teams that handle user support and communications, as well as content and marketing.

TikTok's current global user operations team will be disbanded as part of the move. The remaining employees will be distributed among the company's trust and security, marketing, content, and product teams.

According to sources, some TikTok employees had been informed of the planned layoffs on Tuesday evening, after The Information's report emerged. Chief Operating Officer Adam Presser, and Chief Brand and Communications Officer Zenia Mucha sent a message to the affected teams. 

“The layoffs have been planned for some time, probably almost a year, but recent turnover in the marketing, trust and security teams, as well as TikTok's operations team prompted the delay,” one of the employees was quoted as saying by CNN International on Thursday.

The layoffs are unrelated to the legal and political turmoil facing the company in the United States, which could end with a potential nationwide ban on the TikTok app. 

However, it is unclear how many TikTok employees will lose their jobs. The Information reported that most of the approximately 1,000 employees working on the affected teams could potentially be laid off. 

As information, in 2023, TikTok revealed that it had 7,000 employees in the United States.
