How Much is Indonesian Government Debt?

VIVAnews – The government announced that as of May 31, 2011 it has debts amounting to US$201.07 billion or Rp1,716 trillion by an exchange rate of 8,537 against the US Dollar. The debts soared compared to the last position in 2010 that was Rp1,676 trillion.

Finance Ministry Directorate General of Debt Management’s data shows that more than half of the government’s debts are in the form of state commercial papers.

“The proportion of foreign loan is 34 percent, while state commercial paper 65.7 percent,” as the statement says, Monday, June 13, 2011.

From the aspect of currency, the majority of the debts is in US Dollar, apart from state commercial papers in Rupiah which amounted to Rp955 trillion or US$112 billion. “This figure is temporary.”

Since 2006, the outstanding debts as of May 31 has been the highest. In 2006, the government’s debts were only US$144 billion (Rp1,302 trillion by the exchange rate then of 9,020 against the US Dollar) and in 2007 they went up to US$147 billion (Rp1,389 trillion).

Meanwhile, in 2008 the debts amounted to US$149 billion (Rp1,636 trillion), in 2009 US$169 billion (Rp 1,590 trillion) and 2010 US$186 billion or Rp1,676 trillion.
