Candidates Should Announce Cabinet

VIVAnews – Head of Democratic Party’s Central Leadership Council, Anas Urbaningrum, said that Indonesia needs a new tradition whereby presidential candidates are required to announce the names of its cabinet member candidates.

“Because the public has the right to know how the government will work. One of the ways is to know who would be carrying out governmental operational duties,” Anas told VIVAnews on Dec. 7.

However, he said, not all positions must be announced to the public. What must be revealed are the strategic positions, such as those that are directly related to the vision, mission and primary programs of the candidates who proceed to the Presidential Elections.

“If all the positions were announced, it could burden the presidential candidate if he or she were later actually elected,” he said.

Anas said that the announcement of the cabinet can only be done after the presidential candidate has officially nominated himself or herself. This is because if the announcement is done before the candidate nominates himself or herself definitively, it would be of no benefit to the public.
