Single Identity Number to Be Applied

VIVAnews - Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo is planning to set Jakarta as the first area for the pilot project of applying single identity number (SIN) in Indonesia.

The number will be issued upon preparation of one's birth certificate. The number will then be used as student's official number from kindergarten until university level.

The number will also be applied to convert several identity cards such ID card, driving license, tax identification number, visa, vehicle certicate of ownership and passport.

"Single identity would be applied for people from the time they were are born until the day they die. This is aimed at avoiding double identities or identity duplication," said Fauzi Bowo.

The single identity number is planned to be implemented nationally. Thus, people do not have to worry if they wish to move from one town to another.

However, Fauzi has not yet confirmed when the system will be enforced. He is still waiting for the central government to materialize the concept. Implementation of the SIN project is currently still hampered by several technical matters such as rules and procedures of data modification, concerning especially with relations among agencies that issues identifications, such as the immigration, police departments and the population agency.
