VIVAnews - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Monday, Jan 19, officiated Batam, Bintan and Karimun in Ocarina tourism area, Batam Center, Batam, Riau Islands, as free trade zones.

The official launch of the free trade zone was attended by several ministers of the United Indonesia cabinet and business communities of Batam.

In his welcoming speech, the President stated that the main reason for the zoning is the strategic locations of the areas as well as high economic growth of Riau Islands.

"The economic growth in Riau Islands, which exceeds seven percent, is better than the national economic growth which only touches six percent. Therefore, I appreciate and honor the Governor of Riau Islands, Mr. Ismeth Abdullah," said Yudhoyono.

The President said that it is crucial that the free trade zone in Batam, Bintan and Karimun is initiated in early 2009. In addition to being mandated by the Constitution, the President viewed that the zoning will affect economic growth, investment, trading and tourism.

According to the President, the zoning must also be balanced with excellent services, which in turn will result in improved investment and affect the economy as a whole.

"Don't complicate simple things. If I still hear complaints from those who are obstructed after the zoning is implemented, firm measures will be taken [against the responsible party]," said Yudhoyono.
