Mt Gamalama Erupts, Evacuation Readied

VIVAnews – Mount Gamalama in Ternate, Maluku, erupted Sunday night, December 4th 2011. There are no reports of casualties yet.

However, Ternate’s local government has prepared 10 evacuation spots and refugee camps. Other than that, the local government has also set up emergency response teams when needed.

“There are 10 locations for evacuation. They use several buildings and halls such as ex-governor’s office as well as school halls all over Ternate,” said Ternate’s Deputy Mayor, Arifin Jafar, when reached by VIVAnews, Monday, Dec 5.

Arifin also confirmed that authorities are ready to provide emergency response when required. “This includes vehicles and evacuation routes, etc.,” he said.

Arifin instructed the locals to be cautious, calm, and always pay attention to the information given by the disaster management team. “Do not believe misleading issues,” he said.

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) informed that there are no casualties in relation with the eruption of Mount Gamalama, Sunday, Dec 4. The mount that erupted at 23.00 WIT did not cause any material loss.
