Police Shot Dead in Indonesia Papua

VIVAnews – Another shooting by unidentified perpetrators took place in a mining area of PT Freeport Tembagapura Timika Papua, precisely in East Levi/East Tanggul. A member of Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) was killed in the attack. 

Around 5 AM on Tuesday, Feb 7, 2 teams of the bomb squad (Gegana), each consisted of 6 people, under the lead of Ipda Analito and Kompol Kustanto, were patrolling the East Levi area. At 8.30 AM, both teams were attacked by a group of unidentified men. 

Two members of the Mobile Brigade team shot back at the attackers. The shootings lasted for several minutes. However, a member of the Mobile Brigade team, Briptu Ronald Sopamena, was shot in ribs. The other members tried to bring the victim to a clinic in Mile 38, but he died on his way there. 

Papua Police Deputy Chief, Brig. Gen. Paulus Waterpauw, confirmed the incident.  

“One of our members was gunned down,” he said. 

Temporary measures are being taken. Police are securing the crime scene as well as hunting down the suspects.  

“Our team is still processing the crime scene, and hunting down the suspects,” he said.
