Indonesian Weightlifting Athlete Lisa Rumbewas Dies at 43

Jakarta – The Indonesian legendary weighlifter Lisa Rumbewas has passed away at 43. She died around 3 a.m. local time on Sunday at Jayapura Hospital. 

"As the Chairman of the National Sports Committee of Indonesia (KONI) Central and representing the community of high-achieving athletes, I express my condolences," said KONI Chairman Marciano Norman a statement. 

Norman prayed that the late Lisa would find a noble place in the presence of the merciful God.

"Her contributions as a sports patriot will always be remembered, inspiring Indonesian weightlifters to achieve world-class accomplishments," he added.

Information gathered reveals that Lisa was the first weightlifter from Indonesia and also the first from Papua. 

In her three participations in the Olympics, she consistently won medals. Lisa Rumbewas secured a silver medal in the 2000 Olympics (48 kg category) and the 2004 Olympics (53 kg category). Then, she earned a bronze at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing (53 kg category).

In addition to her success at the Olympic level, her name shone brightly regionally with a silver medal at the 2001 SEA Games. 

Furthermore, her silver achievement in the 2006 World Weightlifting Championships added to her long list of accomplishments. 

In the 2009 SEA Games, she once again clinched a gold medal in the 58 kg category.
