VIVAnews - Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) visits the office of Special Crimes Solicitor General Marwan Effendy at the Attorney General's Office (AGO) to question about the amount of corrupted money that has been recovered and how much of it has been deposited into the state treasury.
During the commemoration of World's Anticorruption Day on Dec 9, Attorney General Hendarman Supandji had said that AGO had recovered Rp 8 trillion (approx. US$729 million) and US$18 million from various corruption cases handled in the past four years.
The data was compared to data of money secured by the AGO during the last four years amounting to Rp 476.4 billion (approx. US$43.4 million), while the Police secured Rp 859.7 billion (approx. US$78.3 million).
However, ICW doubted the validity of AGO's claim. According to ICW, AGO had only returned Rp 382.67 billion (approx. US$ 34.9 million) and the remaining money that AGO claimed to have secured had not been paid in to state treasury. ICW also recorded that the indicated state losses from the corruption cases handled by AGO during 2004-2008 amounted to Rp 13.16 trillion (approx. US$1.2 billion).
In addition, according to ICW, the data did not match the finding of Supreme Audit Agency (BPK), i.e. that AGO had not yet returned around Rp 7.7 trillion (approx. US$701.5 million) to state treasury.
"We have asked about the finding to Marwan Effendy," said Researcher of Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) Febri Diansyah after meeting Marwan, Friday, Dec 12.
Diansyah said that according to Effendy, the problem lies with BPK's audit. Diansyah went on to say that ICW will also ask BPK to audit the overall compensation fund. If needed, BPK should carry out investigative auditing to patch up different interpretations.
During the meeting with Effendy, ICW also asked for a clarification on AGO's claims. "We have requested AGO to give detailed information and to provide interpretation about state money which AGO claimed as having been secured," said Diansyah.
Diansyah added that most of the returned money is still at bank accounts in Bank Nasional Indonesia (BNI), Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) and Bank Mandiri instead of the state treasury.
Effendy also showed four other documents to ICW, said Diansyah. "But we have only read the summary. The documents said US$18 million. Yet, it was only paid into an account at Bank Mandiri, not to state treasury," Diansyah said.
