VIVAnews - Coordinating Minister for Political, Justice, and Security Affairs, Djoko Suyanto, representing the Indonesian President, paid a visit to the renowned declarator of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) Hasan Tiro who is now still under medical treatment in Zainoel Abidin Hospital, Banda Aceh.
A number of ministers and government officials arrived in the hospital around 11.30 am.
After looking in Hasan Tiro, Djoko Suyanto handed over man's letters of citizenship to Hasan Tiro's nephew Tengku Fauzi Zainal Abidin.
Djoko said the proposal for Hasan Tiro's citizenship has been filed some years ago.
"This is initiated by the two parties," said Djoko Suyanto today.
Djoko said that in addition to Hasan Tiro, other former members and officials of GAM have never applied for Indonesian citizenship.
"The government allows other figures to apply," he said.
Hasan Tiro has not yet recovered from his ilnesses.
GAM Prime Minister, Malik Mahmud, said the citizenship will be a positive element for both parties.
According to him, the recognition of former GAM members's recognition is attached in the Aceh peace treaty.
"All acehnese living abroad can gain their Indonesian citizenship because it is part of the agreement in the Helsinki MoU," he said.
