Indonesia Sees High Growth in Car Sales

VIVAnews - Following the boom in Indonesia's middle class, the nation sees the growing number of car sales in the past few years. The economic growth has fueled consumers to spend more.

Based on the report from the Asian Development Bank, the Indonesia's middle class within the last 10 years has risen by 93 million. On the other hand, those people living in poverty have lessened from 171 million to 123 million.

The booming middle class has led to the rising demand of secondary products including luxurious goods such as autos.

Data from Gaikindo (Indonesian Association of Vehicle Industry) shows that car sales have reached 659,574 units, higher compared to 2009 at 486,061 units.

Toyota records the highest sales at 257,220 units by November 2010 followed by Daihatsu at 106,093 units; Mitsubishi, 97,541 units; Suzuki, 65,044 units; and Honda, 56,178 units. Toyota and Daihatsu are two Japan car manufacturers whose imports right is held by PT Astra Internasional Tbk.

"Toyota and Daihatsu mainly sells Avanza and Xenia," said Astra Internasional Head of Public Relations Division, Yulian Warman, today, Jan 12.

Meanwhile, motorbike sales also jumped to 6.86 million units by November 2010. In 2009, the sales were only 5.85 million units.

Honda sells 3.2 million units, Yamaha retails 3.078 million units, Suzuki closes the deal at 484 thousand units, Kawasaki pushes 76 thousand units.
