Fuel Control to Target Public Transport

VIVAnews - The government will put subsidized fuel control into effect by April 1, 2011. Private autos will not be allowed to use subsidized fuel while. The premium fuel is still allocated to public transport. A report shows that the policy is not issued on schedule, the budget deficit will reach Rp3 trillion.

The government still expects a research conducted by an independent team which focuses on fuel control that former Head of Fiscal Policy Agency Anggito Abimanyu helms.

By late February, as many as 409 units of public transport serving the route Pasar Senen-Kampung Melayu will be subject to fuel control trial.

Bar-coded stickers will be attached to hundreds of the designated public transport.

Chief of Jakarta Transportation Agency, Udar Pristono, said public transport will have a quota of one subsidized fuel filling a day. Should the fuel consumption exceed the set quota, they must purchase non-subsidized fuel.

Five gas stations will be targeted for the trial.

However, drivers of the the favored public transport said the regulation still puzzles them.

Arsyad, a driver, acknowledged that he is not yet informed of how and when the fuel control will be implemented.

Arsyad is against the idea of daily subsidized fuel restriction on public transport. "20 liters of subsidized fuel quota per day won't be enough," he said.

Arsyad has been a driver of public transport since 1975.
