VIVAnews - A lawyer of radical Indonesian Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Bashir, Achmad Michdan, denied the allegations that Bashir is involved in the Council of Islamic Revolution. Earlier, Al Jazeera broadcasted a report that a group of Islamic hardliners is trying to topple Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono having several former military generals as their backups.
Michdan said he had been in a meeting with Al-Khattath, who, according to Al Jazeera's report, made the list of names at the Council of Islamic Revolution. Al Khattath told Michdan that the Council was intended at responding over he liberal Islamic teachings in the country.
"I have met Al Khattath once. [The Council] was actually set up to cope with the liberal groups anticipating possible hiatus following [the 2009] elections," said Michdan in Jakarta, March 28.
Had political pause taken place after the elections, the Forum of Muslims (FUI) would have had circulated their version of ministers' list.
"FUI was planned for releasing counter-opinions," said Michdan.
