VIVAnews - Devices used to update the latest condition of Mount Bromo in East Java are stolen just recently despite escalating volcanic activities in the area. "The volcanic observation is thus hampered. We've filed a report to the police. Should there be greater explosion, we can't be held responsible of it," Chief of Geological Disaster Mitigation and Volcanology Center, Surono, told VIVAnews today.
Surono believed the devices were not stolen by any of the locals. "People of Bromo are highly pious. They also pay great respect to their custom and tradition."
In fact, during Bromo eruptions, the local people refuse to take donation as they consider the natural disaster God's blessing upon them.
He also emphasized the locals' consideration over their fellow villagers by refraining from looting the devices. "Take Mount Sinabung for instance. The local people were mad as they found out that the volcano monitoring device was stolen. Fortunately, they soon discovered the culprit."
"Bromo is a popular tourist destination. The locals require accurate information on when they are capable of going down, selling goods or offering guide services," he said.
