VIVAnews - Police confirmed the bomber of Adz Dzikra Mosque inside the Cirebon police compound, West Java, on Friday, was Muchammad Syarif.
Chief of Police Center of Medical Studies and Health, Brig. Gen. Musadeq, said the investigation team needed more time to look into Syarif's identity as the dead bomber was a new player in terrorist link.
In addition, the suicide bombing at the mosque during Friday prayer was considered a new approach of terrors. In fact, Indonesian Cleric Abu Bakar Bashir, now being trialed on terror charges, condemned the mosque bombing. "I must agree with a cleric I once watched on TV who said that the bomber was having mental disorder," said Bashir.
Syarif was said by many as having been active in various protests in Cirebon. He was also involved in clashes triggered by religious issues, including an attack toward Ahmadi members.
He had been caught on video on July 29, 2010, during a collision with police in Kuningan, West Java.
His family thought of Syarif as an abusive man. Abdul Ghafur, Syarif's father, acknowledged that his son labelled him at times as "infidel" in many arguments. However, Ghofur recalled that Syarif was a dutiful son prior to his joining a fundamentalist group in 2009.
"I'm not sure about its teaching. But Syarif always wore robe," said Ghofur.
Upon hearing the news of his son's death, Ghofur instead relieved. "If he still lives, it will cause us more harms," said Ghofur.
Syarif disappeared from home a month before the bombing took place. But, none of his family looked for him.
Syarif was a descendant of noble families, borrowing his mother's line. The mother, Sri Mulat, was daughter of Elang Padang and Mendung Queen of Kanoman Palace.
