VIVAnews – Indonesia is named one out of five countries deemed dangerous for journalists. Numerous cases of violence against journalists are not yet brought before the court.
“In 2010, there were four cases of journalist killings in Indonesia which have caused the nation to have been listed by the Committee to Protect Journalist (CPJ) as one out of five dangerous countries for journalists,” said Sabam Siagian, adviser at the Indonesian Journalists Association, on Tuesday.
The four dead journalists included Chief of Kompas Bureau in Kalimantan, Muhammad Syaifullah on July 26; Merauke TV reporter, Ardiansyah Matra'is, July 30; Ridwan Salamun from Sun TV, 21 August; and editor in-chief of Pelangi weekly, Maluku, Alfrets Mirulewan, December 16, 2010.
Sabam also cited records on acts of violence against journalists owned by the Indonesian Alliance of Journalists.
“There are 42 cases of violence against journalists committed between May 2010 and May 2011. Most cases are neither processed legally nor suspended during their investigations without any clear reasons. An example of this is the case on the stabbing of a VIVAnews.com reporter in Jayapura, Banjir Ambarita,” he said.
Sabam voiced concerns over the minimum quantitites of cases of violence against journalists that are proceeded to the court. He said a trial was only set up for persecution case of a Solo Pos journalist by a military commander.
“The World Press Freedom Index released by Reporters without Borders in 2010 placed Indonesia 117th, lower than 2009 on 100th and 2008 on 111th.
