VIVAnews - Thirteen years ago yesterday, May 12, 1998, Indonesia witnessed a dark moment in national history.
The anti-government protest demanded President Soeharto to step down of his office set off riots. Lines of police held back thousands of university students to Trisakti University compound. Four students were shot to death.
Those deceased were considered by some as 'heroes': Elang Mulia Lemana (Department of Architecture), Hafidin Royan (Department of Civil Engineering), Hendriawan (Department of Management), and Heri Hartanto (Department of Mechanical Engineering). The reformation era has achieved, through their blood at that time. The killing led to a momentous moment few days after: Indonesian President, Soeharto, announced his resignation.
Trisakti University held annual ceremony to commemorate the tragedy.
“The Trisakti ceremony is an effort to commemorate the merits of Trisakti students who had fought against President Soeharto 13 years ago, especially those who were shot to death by snipers,” said President of Trisakti University, Thoby Muhlis.
“The students who had died in this tragedy are heroes. The most important thing about this momentum is we are able to grasp the spirit of mutual help in pursuit of better Indonesia,” Thoby added.
The Trisakti case remains cloaked in mystery.
