VIVAnews – The National Agency for Disaster Mitigation (BNPB) stated that the process of rehabilitation and reconstruction of West Sumatra is now valued at Rp2.665 trillion, which is a total figure of gradual expenditure between 2009 and 2011.
“The details are Rp313.9 billion for 2009, then Rp2.052 billion for 2010 and Rp300 billion for 2011,” said Head of BNPB Data and Information Center Sutopo Purwo Nugroho today, July 13.
Sutopo explained that in 2009, Rp313.9 billion of fund were allocated for four sectors of housing, infrastructure and governmental buildings, social and productive economy as well as advocacy activities. Meanwhile, for 2010 and 2011, the funds were prioritized for rehabilitation and reconstruction.
“As of the first semester of 2011, the government’s achievement in rehabilitation and reconstruction in West Sumatra has been great. As many as 171,756 houses have been built,” he said.
On September 30, 2009, an earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale with epicenter of 71 km Southwest of Pariaman shook West Sumatra province. The disaster claimed many lives and destroyed the environment including houses and public facilities, thus causing economic and social losses.
BNPB data shows that 1,195 people died, 2 missing, 619 with serious injury and 1,179 minor injury. The buildings that were damaged included houses (249,833 units), office buildings (442 units), education facilities (4,748 units), health facilities (153 units), bridge (68 units), markets (58 units), and worship houses (2,851 units). The disaster claimed Rp21.6 trillion of losses.
“The post-earthquake rehabilitation and reconstruction programs in West Sumatra are oriented toward comprehensive planning and aimed to recover the public activities based on the principle of open arms, effectiveness and through optimizing all local resources and wisdom,” explained Sutopo.
