VIVAnews – Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Darwin Zahedy Saleh claimed the island of Sumatra has a strategic position as the hub for developing and processing agricultural products.

Sumatra is also a national energy source as stated in the Master Plan of Acceleration and Expansion of Indonesian Economic Development (MP3EI) of 2011-2025, which directs Indonesia to become one of the world’s top 10 economic powers.

Darwin pointed out, Sumatra is known for its metallic mineral production, namely tin from Bangka and Belitung islands. Other metals produced in Sumatra include zinc, lead and gold. Currently, the export of tin from Bangka Belitung is still the largest in the world.

"The challenge ahead is to increase the added value, from tin to various derivative products, including tin chemicals and other valuable minerals processing," said Darwin today, August 2.

The Riau-born minister added, as the basis of national energy, Sumatra contains 4.8 billion barrels of oil reserves or 61.5 percent of total national reserves of 7.8 billion barrels, with production levels around 574,000 barrels a day.

The oil production in Sumatra region currently holds 60 percent of national oil production. Meanwhile, 60 percent of the oil production comes from the Sumatra’s Riau region managed by Chevron, which is about 370,000 barrels a day.

For natural gas, Darwin went on, Sumatra’s reserves amounts 79.10 trillion cubic feet (TCF) or about 50 percent of national reserves totaling 157 TCF, with a production level of about 3194 million cubic feet per day (MMSCFD).

Sumatra also has quite large coal of about 52.5 billion tons, comprising 11.5 billion tons of reserves and about 16 million tons of coal production.

"The level of production is very small compared to its reserves," he said.

The Energy minister noted that geothermal resources in Sumatra is 7,051 Megawatt electric (MWe) and is the largest part of the total nationwide geothermal resources of 28,000 MWe.

Meanwhile, Sumatra’s geothermal reserves are 6,645 MWe, holding nearly 50 percent of the total national reserves which reached 15,882 MWe.

For the electricity subsector, the average electrification ratio in Sumatra is 68.7 percent, above the average national electrification ratio of 67.2 percent. However, there are still 37 districts out of 151 districts or cities throughout Sumatra which have an electrification ratio of below 50 percent.
