VIVAnews - The export value of Indonesia in July 2011 dropped 5.23 percent to US$17.43 billion compared to June this year. Meanwhile, the import value of Indonesia in July 2011 rose 6.67 percent to US$15.07 billion.
Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) Rusman Heriawan explained the decline in exports in July was due to the decreasing non-oil and gas exports amounting to 7.93 percent from US$14.79 million to US$13.62 million. The largest fall for non-oil and gas exports was crude palm oil (CPO).
"CPO exports fell US$1.1 million because of the government policy which restrains exports by increasing the CPO export tax. This is aimed to increase the domestic supply of CPO in order to prevent oil prices hike prior to Idul Fitri," said Rusman in Jakarta, Monday.
According to Rusman, when compared to July 2010, the total exports increased by 39.55 percent. Oil and gas exports rose by 5.89 percent from US$3.59 million to US$3.8 million.
The non-oil export increase was due to the rising CPO exports by 27.35 percent to US$1.28 million.
Meanwhile, for imports, Rusman continued, from January to July 2011 Indonesia's import value reached US$99.64 billion, an increase of 31.87 percent compared to the same period the previous year which amounted to US$75.56 billion.
Rusman said the non-oil exports rose 3.69 percent to US$12.26 billion in July 2011. The non-oil imports from January to July 2011 rose 26.97 percent to US$76.60 billion. Meanwhile, oil imports in July 2011 reached US$12.26 billion, up 3.69 percent compared to June 2011’s US$11.83 billion.
The export fall and import hike made the surplus in trade balance be reduced to US$1.36 billion in July 2011. The surplus of trade balance from January to July 2011 was still US$16.40 billion.
The weakening U.S. economy caused the surplus of trade balance between Indonesia and the United States to fall to US$482 million in July 2011.
Meanwhile, Indonesia still continues making up for the trade deficit with China in July 2011 which decreased to US$294 million.
