VIVAnews - World Bank claims that gender equality in Indonesia has been better within the last two decades. In fact, a lot of Indonesian women now choose to run businesses.

"We (World Bank) have been working with the Indonesian government to run the program in various areas in Indonesia," World Bank Director to Indonesia, Stefan Koeberle said yesterday, Sept 20.

The World Bank moreover learned that the level of life expectancy of Indonesian women is beyond the average others at 73 years.

In addition to the development of gender equality in Indonesia, the World Bank said it also believes that Indonesian women became more aware of their rights.

But Stefen was of the opinion that so far there are still a lot of sectors that need improvement in the realization of gender equality between women and men. These sectors include, among others, labor force participation, political representation, and access to formal financial institutions, as well as development planning and budgeting.

World Bank Group president Robert B Zoellick in his statement directly from Washington DC said the agency has prepared budget amounting to US$65 billion to support girls' education, women’s health and access to mortgage, services, agriculture and infrastructure.

"In the future, we will prioritize jobs in pursuit of gender equality and find a way to capture the full potential of women," said Zoellick.

World Bank consultant for gender equality, Yulia Immajati, explained that currently the World Bank has implemented a policy for women in Indonesia, one of which is the policy on flexible working hours for women having children. The World Bank will give them the right to work according to their dynamics.

"Our company has already implemented flexible working hours for women so that they can work safely and comfortably," said Yulia.

Yulia went on to say that currently Manpower and Transmigration Ministry along with the World Bank are preparing a policy on flexible hours for Indonesian workers.

Regarding the productivity of Indonesian women in development, Yulia emphasized the role of women during the crisis in the late 1990s. But at that time, women were more engaged in the informal sector, such as grocery stalls and housekeeper. "By the end of the 1990s, women were the ones who bore the economic responsibilities instead as it was easier for them to go into the informal sector," she said.

"For those working in the informal sector, they should be given day offs in weekend. As for domestic helpers, permission to take care of their child, such as breastfeeding in the workplace, is important" said Yulia.
