VIVAnews - Indonesia is seen as one of the countries worldwide listed as having high rate of traffic accidents. Not only on highways, various accidents take place on toll roads. Jakarta Police Traffic Directorate said the number of accidents that occur on toll roads throughout 2011 records 827 cases with 19 people were dead.

"There are several factors that have triggered accidents on toll roads. One of them is the many number of drivers who are often speeding when toll roads are empty at a speed of 120 km/hour," said Chief of Law Enforcement of Jakarta Police Traffic Management Control, Adj. Sr. Comr. Sudarmanto, Jakarta, today.

According to Sudarmanto, toll road users often ignore traffic signs, including the maximum driving speed of 80 km/hour. There are still many vehicles driving at high speed.

Moreover, natural factors could lead to traffic accidents as well. For example, when it rains, the roads turn slippery while the motorists keep on driving at high speed. The fog is also another factor. Thus, the general public is asked to always drive carefully especially in the freeway.

"The highway patrol (PJR) patroling on toll roads will be standby to oversee vehicles so as to smoothen the traffic. In addition, it maintains security and public order. However, the drivers’ attentiveness also plays a role," explained Sudarmanto.
