VIVAnews - An Indonesian boy with the initials of AAL, the suspect of a policeman’s sandals theft in Palu, Central Sulawesi, received guilty verdict from the District Court of Palu, last Wednesday night.  However, the judges did not send AAL to jail, but home instead to his parents’ house. He was also fined with Rp2 thousand of court fees.

Although he was not sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment as requested by the prosecutor, the attorneys did not accept the verdict. AAL’s attorneys, led by Elvis Kanuvu, immediately filed for an appeal.

“It is not a matter of being punished or not, but it is a matter of court facts. Therefore, after discussing with his parents, we have decided to appeal,” Elvis Kanuvu told VIVAnews today, Jan 5.

Other than court facts, the legal team is worried about AAL’s guilty status that may put pressure on him for the rest of his life. That is the main reason of the appeal.

Elvis confirmed that the marathon trial which took place from morning to evening presented many items, proving that AAL did not take the complainant’s sandals.  AAL’s two friends testified that the missing sandals did not match the alleged stolen ones.

“The sandals taken were of Eiger brand, meanwhile the sandals reported as missing was Ando brand,” said Elvis.

Earlier, Chief of Police Public Relations, Ins. Gen. Saud Usman Nasution said that the theft case of sandals belonging to a member of Central Sulawesi Mobile Brigade Police, Briptu AR, were forced to proceed to court because AAL’s parents insisted on the effort.

Police had actually urged the family not to proceed because AAL is a minor.  “The parents insisted legal actions.  Then a lawyer, Elvis, asked for court proceeding,” said Saud in a press conference at Police Headquarters in Jakarta, today, Jan 3.
