Strong Quake Hits Indonesia Aceh

VIVAnews – An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter Scale rocked Indonesia's Aceh province on Wednesday, Jan 11.

The quake's epicenter was 419 kilometers southwest of Meulaboh at the depth of 10 kilometers.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) had earlier issued out a tsunami warning, but lifted it an hour later.

The quake was felt by residents in Banda Aceh and surrounding areas. Aceh’s coastal residents also felt strong wind.

There has not been any report of damage and casualties caused by this quake.

“Based on our monitoring until 4 a.m in Banda Aceh and its surrounding areas, we have yet to find any casualties or damages in infrastructures,” said Chief of the National Disaster Management Information and Data Center (BNPB), Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

Moreover, Aceh’s SAR team has yet to report any casualties.

There has been panic among Aceh residents during the earthquake, especially those living along the shorelines. They moved away from their homes to a safer ground.

Several residents residing coastal areas such as one in Ulee Lheu chose to leave their homes at once. Residents are seeking for higher grounds.

In the center of Banda Aceh, residents were seen roaming around in Pantai Pirak Bridge and Simpang Surabaya Bridge. They continued to monitor the movements of Krueng Aceh River, that may signal the coming of a tsunami.
