US Monitors Munir's Case

VIVAnews - The United States stated its concerns over the murder case of Indonesian human rights activist, Munir Said Thalib. Wife to the late Munir, Suciwati, said the statement was uttered by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to her in a pre-dinner restricted meeting between Clinton and Suciwati at the National Archive building, Jakarta, on Wednesday, Feb. 18.

"When she held my hand, she said she was concerned about the matter," Suciwati told reporters.

Asmara Nababan, accompanying Suciwati during the closed session, confirmed that Clinton and Suciwati were in a meeting. Coordinator of Human Rights Working Group, Rafendi Jamin, was also present in the meeting.

"The invitation was made by Hillary [Clinton]. She asked about the progress of the case and stated that the United States monitors and encourages the completion of the case," Nababan said.

Furthermore, Clinton said that the uncovering of Munir's case will be crucial for human rights enforcement as well as the implementation of democracy in Indonesia.

Suciwati asked Clinton to deliver the United States' concern to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

In response to the call, Hillary said, as quoted from Suciwati, "I will."
