Aceh Party Obeys Helsinki Treaty

VIVAnews - Spokesperson of Aceh Committee for Transformation, Ibrahim Syamsuddin, stressed that Aceh Party still obeys the Helsinki Treaty signed by the Indonesian government and Free Acheh Movement (GAM).

"One of the points attached on the MoU is that there is no mechanism on freedom or referendum," Syamsuddin told reporters on Monday, Feb. 23 at the Vice Presidential office. Aceh Party is established by GAM high-ranking officials.

Syamsuddin is against opinions which have discredited Aceh Party. He said there are various groups that view the Aceh Party as separatist or rebel. According to him, this is an irresponsible attitude which has caused the situation in Aceh and Indonesia to be unstable.

"They must be viewed as common enemy and must be legally processed," he said. During the occasion, Syamsuddin said Aceh Party, presided by former GAM Commander Muzakir Manaf, is still a part of the Republic of Indonesia. "There is no will of violating the Helsinki Treaty," he said.

He requested that all parties maintain on-going peace efforts. Despite the killing of 25 party activists, Syamsuddin demanded that peace is, above all else, prioritized.

In addition, Syamsuddin said that during a meeting with Vice President Jusuf Kalla, they discussed the issue of peace and security, especially prior to the legislative elections. "Let's make the coming Elections run smoothly and democratically," he said.
