Free Papua Movement

Papua Should Not Be Provoked

VIVAnews - A Papuan separatist organization, International Lawyers for West Papua, led by Benny Wenda and is located in the UK, keeps on trying to liberate Papua from Indonesia. It was reported that they are planning to hold a massive demonstration on Friday, April 3.

The Department of Foreign Affairs stated in their press release on Thursday, April 2, that the argument of the International Lawyers for West Papua saying that Papua is entitled to self-determination or freedom mentioned in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and also International Covenant on Economic, Social and Culture Rights (ICESCR), was incorrect and violated the international law.

"The Indonesian citizens, especially in Papua and West Papua Provinces, should not be provoked by the distortion efforts launched by that UK-based  pro-independence group," VIVAnews quoted from the webpage of the Department of Foreign Affairs.

The Department also reminded that, referring to article 19 section 3 of ICCPR, the right to express opinions in a demonstration can be limited as imposed by law in terms of respecting other people's rights or reputation as well as protecting national security, or public order or health or moral.

Being questioned about the massive demonstration planned by the International Lawyers for West Papua, Chief of Papuan Police Department Ins. Gen. Bagus Ekodanto said the Papuan Police have issued Chief of Papuan Police Regulation No. Pol: Perkap/02/III/2009 on opinion expression before the public. The regulation prohibits demonstration, parade, and oration which may attract the masses.

"I will deliver any message if anyone cares to convey some opinion. But, what is the point of mobilizing the masses? We will take any firm measure on such an act. The expression of opinions before the public is not prohibited. It is restricted," stated Chief of Papuan Police Department as quoted from its official webpage on Thursday, April 2.
