VIVA – The Indonesian swimmer Flairene Candrea Wonomiharjo performed flawlessly in the SEA Games 2021 women’s 100m backstrokes. She gets the gold medal on May 17, 2022.

She only spent three months as an official national athlete prior to the biennial multi-sport event. She is a newcomer. 

Flairene’s performance added to the total gold medal tally Indonesia has collected so far. In the 100m held at the My Dinh Stadium in Hanoi, Vietnam.

She logged a time of 1 minute 3.36 seconds, surpassing two Philippines swimmers Anne Isleta Doromal with 1 minute 3.78 seconds and Geriane Taquba J with a time of 1 minute 3.86 seconds. 

Previously, she managed to make a very big surprise in this event. Not considered as a superior and even ogled to win a medal, unexpectedly she was actually able to present a gold medal in the women's 100-meter backstroke for Indonesia.

Flairene said that she feels very grateful and happy for getting a gold medal in the number she participated in. Because, she never imagined that she could win the gold one. Moreover, she only entered the National Swimming Training in February 2022. So, she has only been preparing for the Vietnam 2021 SEA Games for three months.

The 2021 SEA Games was actually the first international sporting event that Flairene participated in, Albert as the coach admitted that his team was nervous. It’s also known that previously, Flairene was an artistic swimmer and had contributed to a gold medal at the Papua National Sports Week (PON) in 2021.

Before the competition start, Flaire Candrea remembered her parents' message. Her parents told her to always pray and never give up.  

"Stay focused and keep praying. Don't be pessimistic, just believe in yourself," Flairene’s parents said.

"Of course, the gold medal is for Indonesia, my beloved country," said Flairene.

The gold medal won by Flairene completed the gold medal previously won by Masniari Wolf in the women's 50 m backstroke.
