VIVA – According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration or NASA, a 'potentially dangerous' asteroid the size of an adult blue whale will pass Earth on Friday, August 12, 2022. Asteroid 2015 FF is estimated to be 13 to 28 meters in diameter.
The object will glide past Earth at a speed of 20,512 mph (33,012 km/h), quoted from the Live Science site.
At its closest approach, the asteroid will be about 2.67 million miles (4.3 million kilometers) from Earth, more than eight times the average distance between Earth and the moon. By cosmic standards, this is a small margin.
NASA marks any space object within 120 million miles (193 million km) of Earth as a 'near-Earth object' and fast-moving object within 4.65 million miles (7.5 million km), categorized as 'potentially dangerous'.
Once objects are tagged, astronomers monitor them closely, looking for deviations from their predicted trajectories that could put them on the path of an Earth-shattering collision.

NASA knows the locations and orbits of some 28,000 asteroids, which it maps with the Last Warning System (ATLAS).
Since the system was operational in 2017, ATLAS has detected more than 700 near-Earth asteroids and 66 comets. The two asteroids detected by ATLAS are 2019 MO and 2018 LA.
The two objects actually hit Earth, the first detonating off the southern coast of Puerto Rico and the latter landing near the border of Botswana and South Africa.
Fortunately, the asteroid was small and did not cause any damage. NASA has predicted the trajectories of all near-Earth objects by the end of this century, and the good news is that Earth faces no danger from an apocalyptic asteroid collision, for at least the next 100 years.
