Jokowi Inaugurates 5G Mining Technology, First in Southeast Asia

VIVA – Indonesian President Joko Widodo inaugurates 5G Mining technology at PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) in Tembagapura District, Mimika Regency, Papua on Thursday, September 1, 2022. This 5G Mining technology is a collaboration between PTFI and Telkomsel, and is the first in Asia Southeast.

"Today, we prove that we have moved forward by implementing the first 5G Smart Mining in Southeast Asia, by PT Freeport Indonesia, supported by PT Telkomsel," Jokowi said in his remarks.

In this occasion, President Jokowi conveys the important of technology intervention for advancing the mining sector in Indonesia, which is generally located in remote areas and difficult to reach by connectivity.

President Jokowi Ensures to Extend Export Permits for Freeport

According to President Joko Widodo, the implementation of 5G Mining technology can support automation, remote control, and improve work safety and productivity of PT Freeport Indonesia.

"Through 5G underground smart mining technology, underground mining activities can really be monitored using cameras connected to artificial intelligence and prevent and minimize the risk of work accidents," President Joko Widodo remarked.

Previously, Jokowi had directly reviewed the use of the technology at PTFI's Grasberg mine. The President of Indonesia said he was happy because this latest technology was manned by domestic human resources especially Papua.

"I am very happy to hear that the underground mine that has a very difficult terrain and controlled remotely, I have seen firsthand, I am happy that 99 percent of the total employees who controlled and operated it were native to Indonesia, especially from Papua," President Joko Widodo remarked.

The former governor of DKI Jakarta is also optimistic that PTFI will continue to produce quality human resources and contribute greatly to the progress of the mining industry in the country.

"I believe this technology will make PT Freeport Indonesia even more considered at the global level and produce more and more quality mining human resources in the world and contribute greatly to the progress of the Indonesian mining industry," President Joko Widodo remarked.
