According to Live Science on Wednesday, September 14, 2022, the region appears small and gravel, potentially being the northernmost known landmass in the world. The discoverers named it Qeqertaq Avannarleq or Greenlandic for the northernmost island.

But there is a mystery going on in the region. Just north of Cape Morris Jesup, small islands that have been found for decades are disappearing.

Scientists speculate that it is a rocky cliff pushed by sea ice. When a team of Swiss and Danish surveyors traveled north to investigate a ghost island, they discovered something else.

In September 2022, these elusive islands are huge icebergs sitting on the ocean floor. They most likely came from a nearby glacier, where a newborn iceberg was covered with gravel from a landslide that then floated up.

This is not the first lost island event in the Arctic or the need to erase from the map. A century ago, innovative air expeditions redrew large swaths of the Barents Sea.

The 1931 expedition was initiated by William Randolph Hearst. Hearst has the Graf Zeppelin or the world's largest airship that flies to the North Pole to meet a submarine that will travel under the ice.

The aerial expedition they are designing will use pioneering technology and make important geographic, meteorological, and magnetic discoveries in the Arctic including remapping large parts of the Barents Sea.
