Saudi Arabia Plans to Consider a 3-Day Weekend System

VIVA – The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia reportedly is considering to switch a four-day workweek and a three-day weekend, the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development reveals, according to the local newspaper Al Madina.

The Ministry declares that it regularly reviews the relevant regulations while researching the current work system. The new rule mandates that employees in Abu Dhabi and Dubai work four and a half days each week. Friday will be a half-day, and Saturday and Sunday will be holidays.

Also, the Ministry is studying the current labor system through periodic reviews to achieve increased job creation and improve the attractiveness of the market for local and international investment.

Earlier on February 17, 2022, the Saudi Ministry of Human Resources denied plans to change weekly working hours to four working days and three weekend days. Saad Al Hammad, a spokesman for the ministry also denied this.

"There is no truth to what is circulating in the media about the ministry's intention to study the issue of reducing the working day." Al Hammad stated. 

Meanwhile in 2023, the plan surfaced again and is being reviewed by Saudi Arabia.
