Japan – Japan Airlines (JAL) launches new service Any Wear, Anywhere that offering passengers to rent clothes upon arrival, so they can leave their luggage at home.
Passengers can borrow outfits based on size, season, and colour. The initiative started on July 5th, 2023 and will run on a test basis till August of 2024.
Another aim of the airline is to reduce the aircraft’s weight, thereby cutting down on the airline’s carbon emissions.
A statement released by the airline said, “With more and more people flying again after the COVID-19 pandemic, and with the recent emphasis in sustainability, there is a growing movement around the world to promote sustainable tourism.”
It further said that the concept of the service is to provide a travel experience with minimal luggage by offering clothing rentals at the destination, thereby creating environmental value.

As per the website of clothing rental service, the weight of passengers, luggage, and cargo together add to the more consumption of fuel.
For every 10 kg of weight cut on a luggage from flight between New York and Tokyo, carbon emissions can be reduced by 7.5 kg.
The website further explains that passengers can also reserve clothes for up to one month in advance and borrow them for two weeks. It also mentioned that the clothing available for rental will be of a mix of brands and second-hand pieces.
The airlines also said that travellers today have a desire to make more sustainable choices when it comes to travel destinations, accommodations, transportation, among others but they still lack good options.
“Most travellers now enjoy eating at restaurants and staying at hotels at their destination, but they generally bring their clothing from home," the Airline said.
The prices for clothing rentals depend on the number of items reserved. Pricing starts at just $28 for up to two weeks, and can go as high as $48.
