“As the functionality of the product continues to evolve, the (app) design also needs to evolve. We want the product to feel fresher and more modern without disturbing the core of its function,” said WhatsApp Head of Design Idit Yaniv on Friday (May 10).

In this latest version, WhatsApp still maintains the green color as its application identity, but now the white color dominates in the latest design.

Apart from the WhatsApp logo, the green color also appears on the “Chats”, “Updates”, “Communities”, and “Calls” icons.

For Dark Mode, WhatsApp applies a darker black color to make it more comfortable to see when in low light.

Then, WhatsApp also presents a new design on icons and background illustrations in the chat section.

The navigation bar on the WhatsApp app for Android is now moved to the bottom, deliberately designed closer to the user's thumb, in order to provide a faster and more natural navigation experience.

As for iOS, the view on the attachment tray can be expanded to allow users to see this feature more clearly when they want to send images, documents, locations, and more.

The new version of WhatsApp introduces a chat filter feature that allows users to find conversations more quickly.

In addition to showing all conversations, the feature at the top will also categorize unread conversations and group conversations.

“We're always inspired by how people use WhatsApp for different aspects of their daily lives and (we) will continue to design technology that helps them stay connected,” Yanif concluded.
