Jakarta, VIVA – The Ministry of Industry is processing the certification of the domestic component level (TKDN) of Apple's leading technology product, the iPhone 16, so that it can be sold in Indonesia.

On Monday (Oct 8) the ministry's spokesperson, Febri Hendri Antoni Arief, informed that the TKDN certification process is related to Apple's investment commitment to build an Apple Academy in Indonesia.

"If they already built the Apple Academy, they can obtain the TKDN certification and start selling the iPhone 16 in Indonesia. Now, it is postponed," he said.

According to him, the TKDN certification depends on the investment realization report made by Apple.

"Any party selling the iPhone 16 in Indonesia is illegal because it has no certification," Arief added.

Furthermore, his party is encouraging Apple to increase investment realization in Indonesia to boost competent industrial human resources (HR).

"We hope many Indonesians can study at the Apple Academy," he said.

The latest iPhone 16, which officially opened for sale on September 20, 2024, has not entered Indonesia yet because it does not meet the 40 percent TKDN requirement.

The Ministry of Industry said that products with TKDN and company benefit weight (BMP) above 40 percent meet the requirement for purchase, especially in the procurement of goods and services by the government, state-owned enterprises (SOEs), village-owned enterprise (BUMD), or the private sector using the state budget, or utilizing state-controlled resources.

Currently, Apple has three Apple Academies in Indonesia - in Tangerang, Sidoarjo, and Batam.

During his visit to Indonesia in April 2024, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the company would soon open the fourth Apple Academy in Bali.

Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Padjaitan, informed that Apple is interested in investing in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) in Indonesia's new capital, Nusantara.
