The naans and the bhatura are still the city’s plumpest and the roasted pappadam the city’s largest — yes, here at Queen’s Tandoor, food get the royal treatment. Everything here is a worthy subject of a craving, be it the sweetish butter chicken, the sassy mushroom and peas masala, the ingeniously simple Chinese-inspired dish of cottage cheese rolled in thread noodles and eaten with sweet and sour dipping sauce as well as the fabulous coriander and mint-laced fish harra tikka. Even the enervating cucumber raita and the lush Delhi specialty of raan e bahar (leg of lamb) are drop dead terrific.

You won’t find finer Indian cuisine between Merauke and Singapore, so try to ignore the Ligna-style mass-produced wooden tables and chairs, the sponged saffron walls with erratically placed rococo Indian art amid mirrored pillars, the giant TV set and the corner grandfather clock that doesn’t chime. Ignore also the slightly impersonal (and resoundingly male) service. You’re here for the food, and the food alone—and also the wine selection, which is not half bad.
