VIVAnews - Jakarta is listed sixth most populous megapolitan of the world according to TIME magazine, with a total population reaching 18.19 million. The first position is held by Tokyo, with 32.5 million of population.

In an article published Wednesday, Tokyo was touted as the world's most populous urban area. However, with its other status as the world's most prosperous city, the capital of Japan is able to accommodate the lives of all the citizens, both native and immigrants.

Meanwhile, TIME names Jakarta as one of the most important cities in Southeast Asia in the 21st century with a very severe traffic congestion problem.

"Jakarta is a metropolitan city full of immigrants from various islands in Indonesia. However, the dire urban planning and construction cause frequent enormous flood in the city," writes TIME.

Meanwhile, the Philippine’s capital, Manila, is the last place in the list with a population of 16.3 million. The town which is also called the Pearl of the Orient has a similar problem with Jakarta, namely rapid urbanization that the poor city management cannot overcome.

In addition to poor urban planning, the problems facing these big cities are pollution, poverty, rapid population growth, and the high cost of living. Here is the TIME magazine’s list of 10 largest mega cities in the world:

1. Tokyo: 32.5 million inhabitants
2. Seoul: 20.6 million inhabitants
3. Mexico City: 20.5 million inhabitants
4. New York City: 19.8 million inhabitants
