VIVAnews - The basic electricity tariff increment starting July 1, 2010 has led to a similar increase in the price of basic needs, such as rice. In Solo, the price of the goods has gone up Rp 1.000 per kilogram. The rise is predicted to constantly climb until before the Ramadhan.
Based on VIVAnews’ observation in Beras Market, Legi Market, Solo, various kinds of rice have undergone quite significant jump in their prices. The regular C4 rice has gone from Rp 6.100 to Rp 7.000 per kilogram while Menthik Wangi has escalated from Rp 6.200 to Rp 7.400 per kilogram.
According to one of rice traders in Solo’s Pasar Induk Beras, Legi Market, Ali Wiyono, the increase has been effective since June 26, 2010 and brings significant impacts since two weeks ago.
In addition to the increase in the electricity tariff, the price rise escalation was also triggered by the attack of pests on rice fields, which caused a few rice-producing areas suffered from lack of crops.
“Even today, although the quality isn’t really high, it still sells. On the other hand, the high price has contributed to the slump in the sales,” Wiyono told reporters in VIVAnews in Solo on July 13.
Another trader, Eni, who owns Adirasa Rice Outlet in Tambaksegaran, Solo said the increase has brought a 50 percent decrease in sales. As a result, buyers from outside the city were the only one left. Their number is also insignificant.
“Before the sharp rise, rice sales could reach 15 to 20 tons per day. Now, it’s only 5 to 7 tons per day. The number of rice sent from Delanggu (Klaten) and Sukoharjo has drastically gone down, despite the fact that those two countries are the centers of rice producers”.
This month, rice supplies only came from Sragen. If the condition continues to occur, rice will go even rarer in the next two or three months. ”There aren’t any more supplies, the price is going higher. The government should’ve been involved through the Market Operation”, Eni said.
