VIVAnews - Two Australian leading newspapers The Age and Sidney Morning Herald and other foreign media have published secret US embassy cables on Indonesia which are leaked to WikiLeaks.
According to the diplomatic cables, as quoted from a web-based Asian regional publication Asia Sentinel, Yudhoyono, widely known by his initials SBY, personally intervened to influence prosecutors and judges to protect corrupt political figures and put pressure on his adversaries.
The cables also mentioned about issues on the Indonesian Presidential Elections in 2009. Coupled with former Governor of Bank Indonesia Boediono, Yudhoyono won the elections by 60 percent of votes. Moreover, the Yudhoyono campaign team is pointed out as having been linked to Bank Century, of which bailout case has caused losses to state by Rp 6.7 trillion.
"One prominent anti-corruption non-government organization privately told the US embassy that it had "credible" information that funds from Bank Century had been used for financing Yudhoyono's re-election campaign," wrote Philip Dorling in Asia Sentinel.
Former vice-president Kalla strongly criticized the bailout, alleging that the Bank of Indonesia under Boediono had been negligent in supervising Bank Century and arguing that the bank should have been closed as its failure was due to fraud perpetrated by major shareholders.
"There's nothing new in the story. No evidence is found [on SBY's involvement in Century issue]," said Chairman of Democratic Party Board of Trustees, Achmad Mubarok, today, March 11.
