VIVAnews - Three men were killed and eight others were seriously wounded during a tribal war in Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara, on Wednesday. The deceased were originated from Kampung Hero Koe, Ruang Village, West Satar Mese Subdistrict, listed as Mathias Jemila, 72, chieftain of Hero Koe; Petrus Jemali, 35, son of Mathia Jemila; and Geradus Gabut, 65, member of Ruang tribe.
A number of machetes and spears were spotted on the scene at local cemetery yard.
The three bodies were then brought to Hero Koe Village.
The clash seemed to occur due to a misunderstanding: a tribe set up a traditional ritual in a public graveyard without notifying the other tribe.
Ruang Tribe, living in the same area as Hero Koe Tribe, was likely offended of the plan. Some Ruang Tribe members went furious. Sius Step initiated to helm seven of the tribe members to attack Hero Koe as the ritual was taking place.
Unprepared, Hero Koe Tribe fought back.
"We could only use daily cleavers while they are equipped with various weapons for war such as machetes and spears. They stabbed me twice on my back. Luckily, I can still breath now," said Vitalis Nahason.
Police are still investigating the case. The perpetrators are on the run.
Two out of the eight seriously wounded are now being in coma due to head-wounds. Six other victims were injured on their backs and hands. All eight are from Hero Koe Tribe.
The Manggarai administration covers the expenses that the victims are subjected to. As for the dead, the local administration decided to pay for the coffins, and funeral services.
Dozens of police officers are still on guard at Hero Koe Village to anticipate further clashes.
