VIVAnews - Indonesia's music industry is in jeopardy. In addition to the many pirated cassettes and CD’s in circulation, downloading Indonesian
songs illegally is flaring up. Therefore the government is requested to curb this.

Sony Music Indonesia President Director Toto Widjojo regretted the illegal downloading of Indonesian music and songs. “We as the holder of the largest market share suffer a quite large loss due to illegal downloading,” Toto told VIVAnews after the ‘I Wanna Get Home Safely’ campaign at Wisma Proklamasi, Jakarta, on Thursday.

He acknowledged that his party faces difficulties in controlling illegal downloading. “I believe Indonesian music consumption is increasing. But we face difficulties in controlling illegal downloading,” said Toto.

According to Toto, it is estimated that there has been around three million illegal downloading practices which might cause huge losses to the music industry. “One website alone can cause Rp90 billion of loss in a month, assuming that one song is priced Rp1,000,” he said.

He expects that the government can help blocking the sites that provide the service of free song download. “The government can block porn sites, why not free song downloading sites,” said Toto, hoping that the government can support the development of music industry. In addition, Toto went on, his party will campaign so that the people do not download songs illegally.

According to non-governmental organization (NGO) for saving Indonesian music world, Heal Our Music, 160 million people visited one of a free online storage sites and there were 80 million activities of free downloading in April 2011. In total, there have been 104 million free music downloading from 15 sites that Indonesians frequented in April 2011.

It is even estimated that there are 200 million downloads a month. Heal Our Music’s survey into 11 respondents of the age between 15 and 25 shows that 53 percent of them prefer free download and only 40 percent agree to pay an appropriate amount.

It was also found that 49 percent of respondents are aware that downloading from an illegal site is an illegal act, yet they do not heed. More unfortunately, 51 percent of respondents are not aware that the activity is illegal.
