VIVAnews - Former National Police Chief, Sutanto, denied the allegation saying he had funded the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) during the protest on the issue of Prophet Muhammad cartoon that came up in 2006.
"Such things are not true," said Sutanto, then helming the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), on Tuesday.
"I have never financed FPI," he said. Sutanto did not want to comment on Wikileaks' disclosure about the funding of FPI as well. "It's not true at all," he said.
The information noting the close relation between Sutanto and FPI is attached in the U.S. diplomatic cables that WikiLeaks let slip. It emphasizes Sutanto's involvement in the demonstration back in 2006. However, the Police General eventually cut the funding following the attack toward the U.S. Embassy.
"When we asked (the U.S. source) about the allegation of Sutanto’s funding FPI, Yahya (Yahya Asagaf) said the police chief considered the FPI was useful as an 'attack dog'," says the wire.
Still according to the source, FPI played the role of intimidation. "Yahya categorized FPI as a tool to steer clear of the security officers from any criticism on human rights violations," says the wire. "Funding FPI is a 'tradition' preserved by the police and BIN."
Another wire mentioned about the association between former Jakarta Police Chief Nugroho and FPI. However, Nugroho defended himself by saying, "it is natural for a Jakarta police chief to have contacts with all sorts of organizations," the diplomatic wire informed.
