VIVAnews – Police are still investigating nine of its members in Sijunjung, West Sumatra, regarding the death of 2 underage prisoners in the local police station.  The two children who were accused of stealing a charity box and a motorcycle had committed suicide.

“If the police were proven guilty, we will hand this matter to our superior,” said Chief of West Sumatra Police Public Relations Division, Adj. Chief. Comm. D. Sugiarto, in his statement to VIVAnews.

Both children died in the custody of Sijunjung Police Station on December 28, 2011.  The police informed their family that both children died from hanging themselves.  The conclusion was a result of hospital autopsy.

G (17) and his younger sibling Fs (14) were reported dead from hanging themselves in the cell’s bathroom.  They were suspected to have committed suicide.

However, family members are suspicious of the cause of their deaths. Their attorneys from Padang’s Legal Aid Service (LBH) believed the death was caused by other things.  The police are also investigating this case.

Currently, nine members of Sijunjung Police are still questioned by West Sumatra Police.  According to Sugiarto, the nine police officers were being examined due to negligence. “If everything runs well, then the investigation will be completed in one month,” Sugiarto said.

According to the report received by the Legal Aid Service from family members, both bodies were received by their family on December 28, 2011 at 9 p.m.  Family members and the attorneys estimated that the children were dead about an hour before the bodies were sent to their family.

“Fresh blood were still flowing on the bodies upon our arrival.  However, we still can’t conclude this occured due to abuse,” said the Legal Aid Service Coordinator, Roni Saputra, told VIVAnews, yesterday.
