2009, Logistics Industry May Have Flat Growth

VIVAnews - Indonesian logistics industry may have slight growth this year compared to 2008.

"The growth may possibly be flat," said David Ng, Senior Technical Advisor of PT Birotika Semesta, DHL Express operator, on Tuesday, March 24.

David said the impact of the global crisis in Indonesia is less serious than other Asia Pacific countries such as Thailand, Singapore and Philippines. "Having 3.5 percent of growth, Indonesia is better," he said.

The logistics industry reached its peak growth in 2008, which was also recorded as the best within the past few years.

David estimated that last year, the growth touched double digits, although a sharp fall was recorded in October. "Several logistics companies enjoyed 20 percent growth," he said. Logistics industry contributed 13 percent of transaction in exports and imports.

According to him, logistics industry is important to support the Indonesian economy, concerning especially with exports and imports. "Indonesia must have sound logistics industry to attract foreign investors to invest [in the country]," he said. Every company must import raw materials as well as export the products easily.

DHL has been in cooperation with clients doing exports especially to the United States and Japan. DHL mostly imports from China and Japan.
