VIVAnews - Being a women does not restrict Asmiah Puspa Sari in pursuing her career. Asmiah has been working as a taxi driver for a year.
Asmiah is one of the ten female Blue Bird Taxi drivers in Jakarta. She bravely took the job, which is dominated by males, to earn a living for her three children who are still in school.
Asmiah realizes her job is very risky. The 35-year-old woman often has to deal with criminal threats and teasing from male passengers. “It’s indeed risky but I’m used to it and always cautious,” she said.
While working, Asmiah intentionally hides her feminine side. She never puts on striking make-up. She even cuts her hair short. “I sport the Tomboy style to scare the men off,” she said laughingly.
Being a female driver does not make Asmiah feel discriminated. She even feels lucky because female drivers are the passengers’ favorite. “They don’t feel worry, especially because I don’t drive recklessly, “Asmiah, who has been a single mother for 4 years, said.
Like other Blue Bird drivers, Asmiah also works in shifts. She also cannot avoid working the night shift. “I’m sad if I have to come home late because my children have already asleep,” she said.
Asmiah does not care about the risks of her job. She is willing to spend most of her time in the road. It is all for her children’s education.
