In 1940, Japanese troops came to Makassar to reduce MVB activities. At that time, Dutch people who were members of MVB were arrested while local players were made into Romusa and some were sent to Myanmar.

Japan implemented many rules that made MVB completely paralyzed. After eliminating the Dutch, the Japanese tried to gain support from the local population by allowing the people to use Indonesian names. From that incident, MVB changed its name to PSM Makassar.
