VIVA – About eight of the meteor shower phenomena will occur in December 2022. A meteor shower is several meteors that fall and pass over the Earth's surface in large numbers, so it looks like rain falling.
As quoted from Instagram @Lapan_ri on Tuesday, November 29, 2022, Meteor is the appearance of the path of falling meteoroids into the Earth's atmosphere. This appearance is caused by the heat generated by ram pressure, which is the pressure on objects that pass at high speed when entering the Earth's atmosphere.
"Of the 8 meteor showers, only Ursid was not disturbed by natural light interference from the Moon. While others are disturbed by natural light interference from the Moon so that the intensity of the meteor shower becomes smaller," wrote the @lapan_ri Instagram account.
1. Phoenicid
This type will occur on December 2 where the point of appearance is from the Phoenix constellation near the star Archenar. It can be seen across Indonesia from the Southeast after sunset until December 3, 2022, at 3 AM local time.
2. Puppid-Velid
This meteor shower will happen on December 6 and can be seen from the Southeast from 9 PM until just before sunrise. The intensity is only six to eight meteors per hour for Indonesia.
3. December Monoceratids
The December Monoceratid will occur on December 8 from the constellations Orion and Gemini. It can be witnessed across Indonesia from the east after Isha time until just before Sunrise in the west.
4. Sigma Hydrid

The Sigma Hybrid will fall on December 8 and can be seen from the east at 9:15 PM local time until it fades into the west before sunset. The radian point is the star Sigma Hydrae in the constellation Monoceros.
5. Geminid
The Geminid meteor shower scheduled for December 14 can be seen from the northeast at 8:15 PM local time. The intensity is 86-107 meteors per hour.
Then, the intensity in Indonesia is only 86-107 meteors/hour. It is because the height of the radian point during transit is between 46-63 degrees above the northern horizon.
6. Coma Berenicid
Coma Berenicid comes from the star Denebola in the constellation Leo, which borders with Come Berenicis. This phenomenon can be witnessed after midnight with a maximum intensity of 3 meteors per hour at zenith.
7. Leonis Minorid December

This astronomical event will occur on December 19 with a maximum intensity of five meteors per hour. It can be seen from the northeast towards midnight until it fades in the north before sunrise.
8. Ursid
Ursid is the closing meteor shower in December and the last in 2022, which will occur on December 23, 2022. It will have the best viewing in the northern hemisphere. Ursid can be observed from the north at 1 PM local time until just before sunrise.
