Indonesia and Iran Discuss Global Geopolitical Situation

VIVA – The Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi held a bilateral meeting on Tuesday. In this meeting, both leaders discussed the world geopolitical situation and several potential cooperation between the two countries.

Earlier we discussed the world geopolitical situation and strengthening bilateral cooperation. We agreed to continue to support the struggle of the Palestinian people and overcome the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, by continuing to voice access to education for women in Afghanistan and continuing to provide humanitarian assistance," President Widodo said.

Regarding bilateral cooperation, the President said that in the health sector, both countries agreed to conduct a pilot project for telerobotic surgery. In addition, a pilot project on telemedicine and collaboration on telemedicine equipment in 11 health centres has also been running.

"I also mentioned technology transfer and joint production with Indonesian state-owned enterprises, as well as biotechnology and nanotechnology cooperation for health, energy, agriculture, and the environment," he stated in a press statement after the meeting, at the Bogor Presidential Palace, West Java.

Meanwhile, in the economic sector, the President revealed that the two countries have signed a preferential trade agreement (PTA). The signing was done by Minister for Trade Zulkifli Hasan and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Iran Hossein Amirabdollahian and witnessed by the two leaders.

"Hopefully, it can further increase trade between Indonesia and Iran," the President stated.

In addition, the two leaders also explored the establishment of business-to-business (B2B) agreements, investment in the construction of the Capital of the Archipelago (IKN), and solutions for investment in the oil and gas sector.

"Finally, related to railway signalling technology, I have expressed hope for cooperation, joint research, technology transfer, and assembly," he remarked.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in his statement expressed his respectful greetings to the people of Indonesia and appreciation for President Jokowi's invitation.

President Raisi also said he was happy to be in Indonesia, which is considered a friendly and brotherly country, "I hope that with the good relations between us and Indonesia, steps can be taken towards the expansion of relations between the two countries,"

In addition to the signing of the PTA, the meeting also saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation to Eradicate the Illicit Trafficking of Narcotics, Psychotropic Substances, and their Precursors. 

As information, the agreement was signed by Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi and Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian.
